How to Apply for the My Safe Florida Home Program (Up to $10,000)

The My Safe Florida Home Program offers eligible homeowners grants of up to $10,000 to strengthen their homes against hurricanes and extreme winds.

The latest phase of the program launched in August 2025 with $280 million in state funding.

The goal is twofold:

  • Reduce hurricane damage

  • Lower homeowners insurance premiums through wind-mitigation upgrades

Even homeowners who do not receive a grant may still benefit from a free wind inspection, which can qualify them for insurance discounts.

Who Gets Priority

Applications are processed first come, first served, but access opened in stages:

  • August 4, 2025: Homeowners age 60+ earning below 80% of county median income

  • August 18, 2025: Other low-income homeowners

  • Later phases: Moderate-income households

  • Late September 2025: General public

Step 1: Get a Wind Mitigation Inspection

The process starts with a state-approved wind inspection of your home.

This inspection:

  • Identifies existing wind-resistant features

  • Can be shared with your insurance company to unlock immediate discounts

  • Provides a report outlining recommended upgrades for grant eligibility

Step 2: Make Approved Home Improvements

If you qualify for a grant, funds can be used for improvements such as:

Roof and Structure

  • Reinforcing roof-to-wall connections

  • Strengthening ceiling attachments

  • Adding secondary water resistance

Openings

  • Upgrading windows

  • Reinforcing exterior doors

Step 3: Save on Insurance

After completing upgrades:

  • Notify your insurance provider

  • Apply for hurricane-related premium discounts

  • Ask about additional savings options

Florida law requires insurers to offer discounts for qualifying wind-mitigation improvements.

Why This Program Matters

Hurricane-resistant upgrades not only protect your home but can also lead to long-term insurance savings, even if you don’t receive the full grant.
